5 Bad Cleaning Habits You Need to Break
Everyone is guilty of making cleaning mistakes. Some of these mistakes may seem simple or hard to believe, but they not only add hours to our cleaning time, they also make your cleaning efforts ineffective. We know you definitely want to make the most of your cleaning time (..when you’re not using Detroit Maid of course!) It’s important to learn from your mistakes that is why we want to share some common bad cleaning habits that you should break ASAP!
Relying on Bleach
Yes…we’re looking at you, lol! for many of us, bleach has been a household staple before we were born. Sadly, bleach isn't as good a cleaner as we thought. More importantly, bleach is intensely harsh, and can cause damage around the house. These reasons alone should be enough motivation to skip the bleach next time you decide to tidy up.
*Side Note: Bleach is not recommended for use on mold, as it only takes the color out of the bleach, not treat the problem itself!
Using too Much Product
Believe it or not, yes there is a such thing as applying too much cleaning product. Don’t worry, you’re not alone here, using too much cleaning product is a common mistake. Unfortunately, over using a product inadvertently creates more work for you in the long run.
Imagine washing a load of clothes and realizing you put in too much detergent, so you need to wash the clothes again to remove the excess amount. The same is true for wood floors: you wax them to death hoping to get an immaculate shine. Instead, all you’re left with after your back breaking work is a duller floor due to the wax buildup. Just remember, for future cleaning sessions, no need to be so heavy handed with the cleanser.
Not Closing the Shower Curtain
You may find the bathroom to be the most unpleasant area of your home to clean. A simple tip, like closing your shower curtain, will save you some additional agony after a relaxing shower. When shower curtains are open, water and moisture get trapped in the folds, and over time, will develop mold and mildew, which can then spread in the bathroom. Start closing the curtain after every shower to protect yourself against pathogens and increase the longevity of your shower curtain.
Letting the Dishes Pile Up
If you’ve ever washed a pile of dishes and felt exhausted afterwards you weren’t exaggerating. Mentally, it’s tougher to wash a huge pile of dishes and it can turn into a job that feels like it last forever. Food grime only hardens over time, so the dishes will be harder to clean the longer they sit there. Hand wash dishes as soon as you can and avoid the pileup. A few minutes here and there is a lot easier than a stack of messy dishes. If this isn’t feasible, consider letting the dishes soak in warm soapy water and load the dishwasher before bed or the next morning.
Hoarding Unnecessary Stuff
It’s okay, we’re all guilty of this one! Whether it’s old souvenirs from a wedding or old issues of magazines you have lying around, these things can add up quickly and take up considerable space in your homes. Start with the fridge and dispose of expired food items and old cooking utensils from the kitchen. Work your way around the house and to other areas such as the closet, which may have heavily outdated clothes. Go through the entire house and be firm in disposing items you don’t use or have any need for anymore.
