7 Steps for a Successful Move Out Cleaning
Moving out soon? Whether you’re moving out of state, to another city, or just another neighborhood across the street, there’s a lot more than packing to be done. Cleaning your old place may be the last thing on your mind, but it should be one of your top priorities, especially if you’re expecting (or hoping) to get your deposit back.
Although a move out cleaning sounds like an overwhelming process, it doesn’t have to be. Cleaning for a move out can be a breeze if you’re organized and make the right preparations early. When it comes to cleaning, a simple moving checklist definitely helps to keep things organized and less complicated. That’s why we’ve created a list of useful tips to ensure that you tackle move out cleaning the most effective and efficient way possible.
Pack All Your Stuff First
Ready to grab your broom and dust pan? …not so fast! Leave the cleaning for later. When you’ve finished packing all your stuff into suitcases and storage boxes, you’ll have much more space to clean efficiently.
Move Boxes to One Side of the House
If you can’t transport the boxes to a storage facility or your new home just yet, stack them in a corner or separate room. This makes it a lot simpler to clean the rest of the house without bumping into any of your packed stuff! Once you’re completely moved out, you can clean the areas that housed your boxes and touch up the rest of the place if needed. Do a final walk-through to check that nothing has been left behind.
Remove All Nails from the Walls and Patch Holes
Decorating your walls is one way to make a space your own, but before you move don’t forget to take out all the nails. Afterwards you’ll also need to fill in the holes, and then touch up the paint.
Clean Kitchen Counters and Cabinets
Depending on the condition of your kitchen counters and cabinets, a deep cleanse may be in order. Anyone moving in will expect their kitchen to smell good and be sanitized which may require you to go the extra mile to achieve!
Sweep/Mop/Vacuum the Entire House
It’s best to sweep, vacuum, or mop the entire house at the same time. Doing each of these steps one room at a time, means dirt and dust can easily be transferred into a room that has just been cleaned. This extends the entire cleaning process unnecessarily. Start by sweeping and/or vacuuming each room thoroughly and then mop the floors for a lasting shine.
Bathrooms
Pro-tip, save the bathrooms for last! Why? During your move out cleaning, you and family members or helpers will be using the bathrooms. It’s better to clean them after everyone is done using them. Of course, they will be dirty, so consider a deep cleaning for those surfaces to get them spotless again.
Take Out the Trash
Last, but certainly not least…don’t forget to dispose of all your trash! You’d be surprised how many people leave that last bag sitting in the middle of a room. Don’t be that person.
